Clinical Study on Toxemia of Pregnancy

Abstract
Clinical features of toxemia of pregnancy are said to be variable depending on the geographic, social and some other factors. This study was undertaken on the people of Daejeon area. The material was 204 toxemia patients among 868 deliveries at Chungnam National University Hospital from Mach 1973 to the July 1976, and Following results were obtained. 1. The incidence of preeclampsia and eclampsia to the total deliveries were 17.5% and 5.9% each. 2. Age distribution was high at the both ends of reproductive age : below 20 and over 41 years group. Average age of toxemia was 26 years. 3. In preeclampsia and eclampsia, primigravidas were affected in 34.9% and 48. 1% each. 4. Seasonal distribution was high in spring especially in eclampsia(50%). 5. Most patients (73.6%) had taken no prenatal care. 6. Postpartum eclampsia was found in 17.3%. 7. Average durations of pregnancy in preeclampsia and eclampsia were 39.5 and 38.5 weeks each. 8. Deliveries with cesarean section was 11.8% in preeclampsia and 5.8% in eclampsia. Pitocin induction was done in 8.3% of toxemia. 9. Average birthweights of the deliveries with preeclampsia and eclampsia were 2943 gm. and 2714 gm. each, whereas 3090gm. in the deliveries without toxemia. 10. Postpartum hemorrhage in eclampsia was found in 21.2%. 11. Average laboratory examination values in eclampsia were as follows: hemoglobin 12.0gm.%; WBC 5700/§¯m .; hematocrit 36.5%; serum total protein 4.9g m.%; creatinine 1.39mg.%. 12. Stillbirth was encountered in only one case among 52 cases of eclampsia. 13. Average duration of hospital admission was 4.2 days in eclampsia.
